If is wasn’t for the support I got from Rainer (South Yorkshire) I would have been back in prison by now.

What We Do

Building on over 200 years experience, Rainer now runs around 55 services and projects nationally, working with thousands of under-supported young people each year.

Many of the young people we work with have been involved with the criminal justice system, are in or leaving care, homeless, may be young parents or are facing serious deficits in their education affecting their employment prospects. Often they are facing a combination of these issues.

Rainer focuses on the following areas that affect young people:

  • Supported accommodation

We all need a home: somewhere we feel comfortable, where we can stay as long as we like, in a warm and caring atmosphere. At Rainer we can give young people a home, teach them how to live there, and let them stay as long as they need.
  • Learning & employability

At Rainer, we know that young people without an education struggle to find work and are much more likely to commit crime, suffer from depression or become homeless. Engaging with education and employment not only gives them self-confidence, it gives them the freedom to live the life they want to, dramatically reduces the risk of offending and means they can make a valuable contribution to society and their community. We give opportunities to young people who either missed out on schooling in their earlier years, or who have found it difficult to engage with mainstream education.
  • Tackling crime

Getting involved in crime or persistently offending is too easy for some young people who do not have the right support. We help these young people to find their feet and give them a fresh start in life. We work intensively with young people who persistently offend,  tackling their offending behaviour and working with them to deal with the consequences of their crime, both for their own benefit and for the community in which they live.
  • Supporting young people and their families

Many of our young people have struggled through life without the care of parents and family that so many of us take for granted. At Rainer, we see young people and their families at a point of crisis when emotions are high with feelings of failure, anger and helplessness.  Our work can often help families find solutions for themselves. Helping young people rebuild their relationships with their families, even if they cannot go back home to live, is an important part of establishing a support network around them. And if young people become young parents, when they can often find it hard to offer the care a baby needs, we support them with their parenting, as we know that this is the best way of preventing problems later on in life.
