Volunteering for Rainer has opened the doors for me...[it] can be stressful at times but if I can make a difference for one young person then it's worthwhile.

Dan Conner, appropriate adult, Rainer East Sussex Appropriate Adult Service

Appropriate Adult

The role of the Appropriate Adult was introduced as a result of the Police and Criminal Evidence (PACE) Act 1984.

The legislation allows for those who are deemed to be vulnerable, including young people under the age of 17, to have an 'appropriate adult' other than a solicitor present during the police interview process.  For young people, this is often the parent or carer, however there may be circumstances where they are unable or unwilling to attend.

Rainer offers this service in partnership with Youth Offending Teams (YOTs) in a range of locations by providing trained volunteers to attend the police station and support the individual.

Potential volunteers receive induction training into their role and then shadow existing volunteers for a short period. The volunteer programme is accredited, providing prospective volunteers with the opportunity to work towards a recognised Btec qualification.
