Rainer response to Chief Inspector of Prisons' Annual Report

30 January 2008

Responding to the Annual Report of the Chief Inspector of Prisons, Rainer Chief Executive Joyce Moseley said:

"Here is yet another report highlighting the massive problems that result from overcrowding in our prisons, with the Inspector warning that the prison system has reached a crossroads.

"Young males leaving jails today are as likely to reoffend as they were when leaving the prison hulks in the 1800s, arguably because we are still failing to help people move on from overcrowded jails.

"In particular, the Inspector raises concerns about the number of young people who are held long distances from their families and carers - a situation that can lead to the breakdown of relationships and significantly hinder progress in resettlement.

"With reoffending responsible for half of crime, it seems clear that the government's Green Paper on resettlement - due to be published later this year - could point the right path to take us forwards from the crossroads that Anne Owers describes."
