I have found that Rainer staff are very easy to talk to and that they are there to help me.

Medway

An Every Child Matters (ECM) focused survey looking at the 5 key outcomes in relation to the risk and protective factors has been piloted in Medway.

Recognising the importance of this Government agenda we have been working with Medway Council, Rainer and the DfES to develop the Rainer CtC survey to be able to be used to measure the 5 key outcomes.

The survey was carried out in Autumn 2007, surveying the whole borough. The survey will then be rolled out across the UK. For further information please contact us.

Coventry

Rainer CtC began in Coventry in 1998 and has been working there ever since. A survey of 11,500 secondary school students across the city of Coventry has been completed.  A follow up survey is due to happen this year (2008), to look at what has changed, compared to the previous survey and to measure the impact of programmes.

The resulting information is currently being disseminated by the city's Children and Young Peoples Strategic Partnership. This work is being led by a dedicated CtC community co-ordinator employed by the Council.

New Earswick (York)

A number of initiatives included in the Action Plan for Rainer CtC New Earswick (York) are well established, whilst others are being developed. A second Risk and Protection Audit took place in March of 2005, the results are being used to consider the progress of the work and what should happen next.

London

Over the past few years, Rainer CtC has been working with the Government Office for London (GOL) and the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to help tackle the problems of gun crime and gun culture in the capital. The three-year project has three phases:

Phase One saw the development and deployment of a new version of the Rainer CtC Youth Survey questionnaire, with additional questions that explore young people's attitudes to - and experience of - weapons (including knives and guns) and gangs. Surveys were conducted to 15,000 young people across six London boroughs and the findings were published in 2005.

Phase Two, was the process of dissemination of the findings to the boroughs and a view of the overall picture. The findings in the local borough were then discussed to identify suitable locations for a community prevention programme in each borough. This was Phase 3.

Community prevention strategies have been developed in Hackney and Brent with alternative approaches in the other communities.

Gangs and their behaviour patterns

CtC has surveyed other boroughs in London and has datasets comprising of over 27,000 young people from the last 4 years. This creates a picture of behaviour patterns of those involved in gangs at various levels and compares them to those who class themselves as not in a gang.  Risk and protective factors have been identified which can be tackled via prevention strategies that can work towards potentially reducing these types of behaviour.

Surrey

In Surrey we worked with three distinct communities:

The Preston programme located in Banstead is implementing its action plan in conjunction with the development of the Preston Regeneration Plan which aims to deliver social, environmental and economic benefits to the residents of Preston. The Rainer CtC action plan forms the backbone of the social focus of the regeneration aspects of the plan.

In Leatherhead we worked with the multi-agency partnership to develop recommendations around the provision of preventative services in the area and particularly in the development and planning of the new Children's Centre. The work will utilize Rainer CtC's preventative, risk and protection factor based approach to problem behaviour, to strategically embed aspects of prevention within the Children's Centre's work with other relevant agencies/partnerships such as the CDRP, PCT etc and the newly formed Primary school.

In Court & Ruxley the risk audit was used to develop the action plan for these two wards near Epsom in Surrey. This has now happened and the action plan is being delivered to impact the area.
